The Bonțida estate came into the possession of the Hungarian Bánffy of Losonc family in 1387, when Sigismund of Luxemburg donated it to Dénes, son of Tamás Losonci. The present castle was preceded by a manor house from the 15th-16th centuries. After 1640, Dénes Bánffy (II) fortified the initial building between 1668 and 1674 with curtain walls and circular towers, and a seven-storey gatehouse. In the 18th century, Dénes Bánffy (IV) reconstructed the castle in Austrian Baroque style, adding a U-shaped Cour d'honneur and a 70-hectare park designed by Johann Christian Erras, with statues by Johann Nachtigall. In the 1820s, József Bánffy demolished the gate tower, and in 1850, architect Anton Kagerbauer modified the western wing. Count Miklós Bánffy renovated the western wing in the 1930s with architect Károly Kós.
